Vitamin D and You
Thursday, December 2nd, 2010Even though I read, listen, and contribute to the media, I still want to wring its neck sometimes.
This week a study was released, talking about how we don’t really need to take Vitamin D supplements (or calcium), and that we get enough from the sun and food. Most people, the report said, have Vitamin D levels that are sufficient.
I say, don’t listen to the noise.
Take 2,000 IU of Vitamin D every day, a multi-vitamin, 500 mg of Calcium, and you’ll be good to go. Taking this amount will not hurt you, and can only help. Far too many studies have shown that Vitamin D, in particular, helps to keep many diseases at bay. Why in the world would we want to stop taking Vitamin D? There’s absolutely no downside to taking it. By ingesting too much calcium you do risk developing kidney stones, but it is a small risk for most people.
We take calcium primarily to ward off osteoporosis, but the truth is, we would be much better off if we focused more on strength training exercises: push-ups, squats, running (with walk breaks), all of which help to build muscle strength.
I’m a big believer in being your own health advocate, and in staying aware of new information as it becomes available, but at the same time, we have to know when to tune out the noise, and listen to our own good sense, and to our bodies.
Keep taking that Vitamin D.
Best of Everything,
Barbara
