THROW OUT YOUR BLOW DRYER!

Hi Everyone,

Do you even know what your hair is anymore?

After decades of blow-drying and pulling and stretching and coloring and perming  . . . how could anyone know?

Years ago I had a long talk with my hair.  I made a very strong case, but it simply refused to listen. The battle lines were drawn.  My hair wanted to be curly, and me?  Nope.  It was 1969 — a year full of rebellions — and I had to look like a Mamma from the Mammas and the Pappas– straight hair, parted down the middle.  Hello, orange juice cans and Dippity Do.

Until the 1970s when I discovered the Farrah Fawcett look and the blow-dryer, all in the same year.

The 80s .  .  . well, let’s just forget about the 80s.

In the 90s, my hair had to be blow-dried and ironed straight and sleek by the latest hot stylist.  Rain?  I stayed in.  Humidity?  Baseball cap.

Well, I won the war, but lost the battle. As I entered my 50s, I no longer had hair.  I had road kill.

After alot of digging, I finally found the solution – letting my hair be what it was meant to be.  No more blow-drying (unless I’m in a terrible rush and it’s 32 degrees or colder), and alot less shampoo (especially shampoo with sulfates).

Try it.

Best of Everything,

Barbara

    Hi,
I saw you on the Today show and loved your hair. I also have curly hair that I blow dry and flat iron…What products do you use to have your hair behave and not be a frizzy mess?

Thanks! I am ordering your book!

    Joanne

  2. Hi Joanne:
    Thanks for watching the segment.
I use a sulfate-free shampoo only once a week, and it’s from Deva. You can get it online, or at certain hair salons. The other days I use just DevaOne conditioner and water. In my book, I give very detailed instructions on what to do to let your hair be what it was meant to be!! The right cut is important, too. We curly girls need a little layering to create the right look. If you go back to my website, and check on the site for deva concepts, they list salons across the country that cut hair “the devachan way”. I also use a little bit of their gel after washing, and scrunching to help keep it all in place while it’s drying. Hope this was helpful!
Thank you so much for buying the book!
Please keep in touch. Can you friend me on FB??
    Best,
    Barbara

It needs to be blow dried if you’re going out to meet strangers whom you don’t want to frighten on their first experience of meeting you!! LOL!

My hair is wavy/curly with medium sized waves, shoulder length. I only blow dry for special occasions or meeting clients, otherwise, I use a good leave-in conditioner & use different conditioners for different types of weather (humid, dry, extra crazy weird weather)

I’m going to check out that Deva. Sounds like just the conditioner I need with summer coming up.

I saw you on the Today show with Kathie Lee and Hoda a couple of weeks ago. Today, after washing my hair, I thought about the advice you gave and decided to let my hair air dry. Coincidentally, I just came across your website because of a link that was posted by your web designer in an online publishing group. I then realized you were the same person I had seen on TV!

I found you on facebook, and then today, I started reading your posts on this blog. I think we are sisters of the hair! I turned 55 in the fall, and unhappy with the stalled condition of my life and hair and skin, I took myself off to a dermatologist, who told me I have a genetic hair loss condition that cannot be reversed. I made the decision to stop blow drying and straightening my hair after 40 years or so of it while I still had some-I had NEVER missed a day! So I let it go, and I learned how to care for it online( devachan, Jessicurls). I was so surprised that I have curls! Real curls! Everywhere I go I have women ask me about my hair! It totally changed how I feel about myself. It released me to embrace my inner artist again, I started making jewelry, playing music, I lost 23 pounds(so far). I read your blog/facebook everday, and today I am buying your book. Thanks for all your inspiration to keep moving forward!
    Your sister of the hair,
    Madeline!

  10. Right on! As a girl in junior HS, I totally agree on this. It is fantastic the things we can learn about our hair, the different hairstyles, especially once we start using all natural hair products.
