Knowing When to Trade One Dream for Another

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

I ran the NYC Marathon in 2003 when I was 47, not knowing exactly what I was getting into, especially since I only started running in order to be in the marathon.

At that time, my goal was simply to finish. And, I did… in six hours and 45 minutes. Not a world record by any means, but it felt good to know that I had actually run in and finished this notoriously hard course. The idea that I probably could do better, though, nagged at me for a long time.

Shortly after that first marathon, I stopped running and pretty much stopped doing any form of exercise. It wasn’t until I turned 50 and started to question everything, leading me to research and write my book, that I tiptoed back. (more…)

Would You Wear a Bikini After 50? After 60?

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Gerit Quealy, writer, friend, and style editor of the fab website StyleGoesStrong.com, did this piece about wearing a bikini after a certain age.  My Cousin B (also known as my style muse) has worn a bikini her entire life and doesn’t see why she has to stop now that she’s 62. It’s human nature to always be ready to jump on the next “new thing” . . . whether it’s a diet that everyone is raving about, an exercise program that promises to get rid of cellulite or (finally!) the skin cream that will erase wrinkles as soon as you spot them. If something seems too good to be true, it’s usually not. (more…)

Who knew that the secret to great health and happiness lies right at our feet?

While trying to come to grips with the changes my body, mind, and life were going through after turning 50, I came across a life-changing article in the Wall Street Journal about Jeff Galloway, the Olympian and marathoner who developed the Run-Walk-Run program used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

The article was published the day after the NYC Marathon, so it’s focus was on how anyone can train and run in a Marathon using Jeff’s program.  At that time, I was more interested in losing the 15 post-menopausal pounds I had packed on, and looking for ways to incorporate exercise and fitness into my life without spending a lot of money or time in the process. Meet My Dog, the Trainer

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

We all need to move our bodies every day. Period. Running, walking, spinning, biking … whatever your choice is, you’ve got to do it. You’ll keep your weight down, health check numbers where they should be — and it just feels good! But sometimes we need that little extra reason to get us out there.

While writing The Best of Everything After 50, I insisted that my readers had to, at the very least, walk 10,000 steps every day — and yet, I was barely making it to 3,000. Why? The same excuses that you probably have – too busy, too tired, will do it later, have a headache. There I was, telling women what to do, and barely doing it myself. Until Gunther entered our lives.
